His Father, Calvin

A theater and cinema actor from the Bahamas, Calvin Lockhart (born Bert McClossy Cooper; October 18, 1934 – March 29, 2007) was an American. In the 1970 movie titled Cotton Comes to Harlem and the 1975 Warner Bros. movie Let’s Do It Again, Lockhart played Reverend Deke O’Malley and Biggie Smalls, respectively.

A dramatization of Warren Miller’s book of the same name called The Cool World, in which Lockhart made his Broadway debut in 1960 as a gang boss, closed after only two performances. Before coming to West Germany and then England, where he got a number of roles on British television and tiny roles in movies including 1968’s A Dandy in Aspic and Salt and Pepper, Lockhart first moved to Italy where he founded his own theatrical company in which he both acted and directed.

Lockhart’s debut on-screen performance was in Joanna, a 1968 movie about an interethnic romance that takes place in London. Michael Sarne, who directed Joanna, then chose Lockhart to play the infamous Myra Breckinridge. In Halls of Anger (1970), Lockhart played a former basketball star who is appointed vice-principal of an inner-city high school where 60 white pupils are being transferred. This was Lockhart’s first leading role in a movie.

He played the Reverend Deke O’Malley in Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970), which was based on the same-named Chester Himes novel. Lockhart joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, as an actor-in-residence in 1974. He played Jonathan Lake for seven episodes of the popular soap opera Dynasty in the 1980s.

In the late 1970s, Lockhart oversaw a Los Angeles anti-drug initiative to wean teenagers off drugs called “Getting Off Drugs.” In the late 1990s, Lockhart went back to the Bahamas and directed a number of Freeport Players Guild shows. Lockhart’s final screen appearance was in the 2007 film Rain, which was filmed in the Bahamas. At the age of 72, Lockhart passed away at a hospital in Nassau on March 29, 2007, as a result of complications from a stroke.

Lockhart had two sons and was married four times. He wed Jamaican model Thelma Walters in 1972, and the two later got divorced. Lockhart wed British entrepreneur Lynn Sloan in the Bahamas in August 1982; the couple eventually got divorced. Actor Julien Lockhart Miles was born in 1981 after Calvin married Jennifer Miles, his fourth and last wife, in 1979. After 25 years, the two got hitched in 2006, with Julien escorting his mother down the aisle.
